To once again celebrate the famed month of loved, I thought I would compile a list of my favourite all time geek couples. Couples that have had me weeping in their saddest moments, and rooting for them to finally make it work when everything else seems against them. These couples are seriously awesome, and I doubt they would be spending Valentines Day handing over boxes of expensive truffles or toasting classes of champagne. No they would be side by side, fighting crime or battling monsters. So without further ado…
Han Solo and Princess Leia
So I thought I would kick off this list with a couple we all know, and most of us love. I mean I know it isn’t your typical fairytale, but when the cockiest hero in the universe finds his match in the kick-ass no nonsense Princess, well you got to admit it is kind of awesome. Plus, you can’t forget the brilliant moment in which Leia tells Han she loves him, and he replies with ‘I Know’. Arrogant, but in such a cool way.
Wall-E and Eve
Admit it guys, I was not the only was to shed a tear during this heart wrenching, but also warming, Disney Pixar masterpiece. From the moment Wall-E falls for Eve, we all knew it was going to be a couple that would go down in history. From when he holds the umbrella over her head in the pouring rain, to when he follows her into Space, to be with his one true robot love, it is all so cute. You totally forget you are watching a trash compactor, and floating Space age robot fall in love, as it just seems so sweet.
Spock and Nyota Uhura
I know there are plenty of timeless couples dotted around in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy universes, yet I had to save a small space on this list for one of my favourite newer couples. When Spock falls for Nyota in the 2009 Star Trek film, we all want it to work out. Seeing someone who has repressed his feelings for so long, wear them on his Vulcan sleeve. You have to admit, it is pretty powerful.
Sheldon Cooper and Amy Ferrah Fowler
These guys make it onto the list, because there has never been a geek TV series couple that has had me in stitches as much as these two. Relationship contracts, Sheldon’s complete refusal for Amy’s much pined for intimacy, and the awkward Skype chat with Amy’s mother , it can be called no other than comedy genius. The big questions stands though, will these guys ever kiss or as Sheldon so eloquently puts it ‘engage in coitus?’ who knows, but if they do, I am sure it will be hilarious.
Khal Drogo and Danaerys
In what began as a rather uncomfortable arranged marriage, came one of the strongest fantasy fictions loves of all time. Once Dany had learnt to care for and respect her horse lord leader, and vice versa, we see love blossom and seriously thrive. I mean, someone has to be seriously special for you to call them ‘my moon and stars’. Trust me guys, this one will go down in history, it is known.
Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger
So we all knew it should happen, it was just a question of when J K Rowling would be kind enough to put our hearts and rest and let it! One of the best romances throughout the Harry Potter books, because if you, like me, followed the series from the very start, you really felt this relationship grow, as if you were watching it yourself. Plus, can anyone see how they are totally going to turn out like Mr and Mrs Weasley Senior?
Aragorn and Arwen
Ever been so in love that you give up your immortality, and pledge to be with another? I didn’t think so, but that’s exactly what gave this couples their well earned place on this list. It is true love when you decide that you would rather be able to die, than live without your other half. Plus, they are one seriously good looking, and badass couple. N.B. I was going to add Gimli and Legolas to the list, and their bromance is also just truly wonderful, but decided against it for now!
Mario and Princess Peach
Ever saved your princess for the 100th time, to have her stolen and kidnapped moments later once again? Poor Mario, it is really true love when you will spend your life saving your other half, to spend the briefest of moments with her again before she is whisked off.
And finally….not really a couple, but they totally deserve to be on this list.
Master Chief and Cortana
So not a couple in the traditional way, but in the way that each of the pairing rely on each other so very much, and form such a brilliant team when together. Therefore, when their story finally comes to an end with her valiant sacrifice at the end of Halo 4, it really was incredibly moving. Even under the heavy, shielding armor of the chief, you could feel his sadness that was certainly etched upon his face, especially in that moment when he looks down to Earth at the very end.
