Giving Up The Ghost: The Death of Survival Horror

Aaron

Can you remember creeping through the halls of Resident Evil’s mansion for the very first time? Can you remember seeing Silent Hill’s nightmare world unfold before your eyes as you gripped your controller in sweaty anticipation? I can; but the thing I am most afraid of does not lurk in the dark, it’s forgetting what we were so scared of in the first place.

If you look on any big games website and look up the reviews for Resident Evil 6 or Dead Space 3, you will see a raft of people screaming at the top of their voice that survival horror is dead. The tattered flag of previously revered franchises is left flapping at half mast amidst a sea of disdain.

Gears of War Meccano Toy Review – C.O.G. Centaur Tank

When I was about 5 or 6 I remember being at a family friend’s house. Being a petulant child I wanted something to entertain me, when a bright yellow metal briefcase was laid in front of me I finally felt like I was growing up. I was seen as too old to play with Duplo or Lego, I was now moving onto the toy for adults and engineers. Of course the Meccano which was held within the yellow case was too much for me. I was too young and without instructions, I wasn’t able to produce anything more than bolting various metal pieces together in a straight line; to be honest my skill with Meccano was much like that of a relatively bad clown making balloon animals “look kid a snake!”

Muscle Museum: Gender Equality in Discrimination

Ruaidhri Walker

For some reason everything in life seems to be broken down by gender. Negative or positive, everyone is assigned a role by society. As gamers we are often generalised as being nerdy overweight men, and while in my own case this is true it obviously isn’t for all, you need look no further than this very site to see there are female gamers.

Bromance In Games -The Greatest Male Double Acts Vol.1

Ruaidhri Walker

Bromance (Noun): two dudes who have what can only be described as a loving relationship but keep it purely platonic. More often than not the best way to get this across to the uninitiated is to use the phrase “Brother from another mother”. It’s a sense of camaraderie and respect that would normally be seen in a married couple but is usually viewed in men in the mid-twenties to mid-thirties.

In video games there has been some wonderful examples of this phenomenon. Sometimes this just flows over the player because of bad writing and bad acting, but every so often a game has genuinely touched me in the way it’s portrayed hetro-love.
